Edinburgh Crystal Commemorative Large Presentation Goblet.

Designed by David Hammond in 1970, and engraved by Fred Lonie, MBE

This beautiful engraved goblet, featuring the figure of a sprinter,  was made to celebrate the Commonwealth Games held in Edinburgh in 1970.

It is a rare item as it was limited to only 50 pieces - and this comes with its certificate of authentication  with the Certificate No: 22. It also comes in its original presentation box with a blue velvet lining - and marked Edinburgh Crystal in gold lettering on the exterior. Surviving examples of this historic glass trophy are now very hard to find, and probably only given out to important Olympic officials at the Games  - and I would imagine that this is now a bit of a museum piece.  In perfect condition - Height: 23 cm - see slide show to the left

British Studio Glass Bowl by Paul Musgrove

Musgrove trained in Art & Design at St Albans College of Art, where he was tutored in printmaking by John Brunsdon (see our sister Iconic Art site).

He subsequently undertook a  BA(Hons) course in 3-D Design at Manchester Polytechnic, specializing in furniture design/manufacturing and hot glass making, and graduated in 1980.

In the 1980s Musgrove joined the “Glassworks” hot glass studio in Holyrood Road, Edinburgh, Scotland  where he assisted in setting up the workshop with fellow glass artist, Jenny Antonio. The studio was just a few hundred years away from the site of one of the first glasshouses in Edinburgh, The Ford Glassworks - which dated back to the 1800s.  At the end of 1986 the studio moved to Musselburgh - but it sadly closed in 1990. In more recent times, Musgrove has turned his attention more to printmaking. He exhibits regularly around the country.

This glass bowl is one of the pieces that he made at Glassworks and is now a rare piece of Scottish studio glass.

It is signed and dated 1985 - £65

1970s Caithness Canisbay Decanter Set

Colour: Heather

The decanter is 11 1/4 inches in height (29 cm) and the glasses are 4 1/2 inches in height

SOLD

This is a lovely set of collectable "space age" design glasses and decanter. It is a lovely subtle purple colour called Heather and the design is called Canisbay. The set was designed by Colin Terris in 1972, and was awarded a Design Council accreditation shortly after its introduction.

This range was highly successful and its stylish minimal forms look just as good today as the day they were made.  The set on offer here - consists of the decanter with a hollow blown glass ball shaped stopper and six matching glasses with chunky clear glass stems. The design is obviously influenced by Scandinavian glassware and these would look great on a rosewood or teak sideboard or cabinet in your interior.

All pieces are of course perfect condition.

This is a very unusual vintage 1980s glass paperweight taking the form of a Sinclair ZX Spectrum Computer.

It was made by Caithness Glass and is No. 33 from a limited edition of only 50 ever made.

It was made in 1983 to celebrate the production a million ZX Spectrum computers at the Timex Factory in Dundee. It should really be going into the new V&A Museum for the city - with its dual Scottish provenance.

The machine launched  the home computer revolution in the UK and inspired a generation of owners to start making games.

Price reflects the rarity of this piece:  £175

The machine launched the home computer revolution in the UK and inspired a generation of owners to start making games.

The original 8-bit computer was the brainchild of Sir Clive Sinclair. After it went on sale in April 1982, the 3,500 workers at Dundee’s Timex factory struggled to keep up with demand. Soon they were producing more than 70,000 Spectrums a month. Sales passed the one million mark by the end of 1983 (commemorated in this rare promotional weight) and eventually five million units were sold. It is believed that the close ties between Spectrum and Dundee encouraged many of the city’s budding young coders to view games development as a legitimate career – a legacy that continues to this day, with around 40 games firms active in the area.
