CRAIGLOCKHART
STATION:
The tram route to Craiglockhart was one of the earliest to use electified trams - and started a service
as early as 1910. Many trams ran from Granton to the railway station at Craiglockhart. This station opened on 1
December 1884 and was located on Colinton Road, near the Myreside Aqueduct of the Union Canal. The station closed in
1962 under British Railways rationalisation programme, although the line is still in use today for freight services
and the occasional diverted passenger train.
FOR SALE: Extremely Rare Burtles and Tate Pink Glass Elephant
£995 Please
note that this price takes into consideration condition with feet ... but is a fair price for this rare piece - another example
is currently listed on ebay January 2012 for £1450.

This is an extremely
rare, probably a museum piece, a gorgeous rosy opalescent glass elephant by the Victorian glass manufacturer Burtles and Tate,
who were located in Manchester. The design was registered on 28/12/1886 as Rd. 64234 (which is marked on my one below). These
elephants, especially rare in this colour, were very difficult to make and many were damaged coming out of the mould, and
were not commercially viable to produce. This particular colour - pink or "sunrise" - is one of the rarest colours for this
elephant and also undoubtedly the prettiest. It was manufactured as a posy holder or salt dish, and is one of the rarest examples
of late 19th century pressed glass.
Another one features
in the book: Millers Popular Glass of the 19th and 20th century Collectors Guide, (page 47) where it is described as follows: "One of the great rarities of pressed glass is the pink elephant posy- or flower-holder of Burtles & Tate,
Manchester. This highly attractive design, no. 64234, registered in 1886, is scarce in opal colours and particularly
rare in the rose opalescent shown below. The reason for the scarcity lies in the complexity of the mould; there must have
been quite a few unsuccessful pressings. Known examples are crisp, but the problematic mould was soon abandoned for economic
reasons".
These elephants hardly ever come up for sale and are usually star pieces
in any specialist glass fairs - so my 'The Pink Elephant' is really a must for any discerning collector
or collection. "Little Bertie" (I have named him this
after Edward VII, Prince of Wales) is in fine condition as you can see in my photographs. There are however, a few minor
nibbles to the glass, mostly confined to his legs, but not disfiguring when on display and given that he is
a rare little glass elephant perhaps these little blemishes are acceptable. I have tried to take photographs
where these occur, but am happy to give a full conservation report on request.

James
Tassie was celebrated for his series of casts of antiques, gems, cameos and intaglios in coloured paste, enamel and sulphur.
He modelled various subjects including portrait busts, and for a time worked as a modeller for Wedgwood. Tassie was probably
best known for his portrait medallions of his eminent contemporaries, which were modeled from life or from drawings from life.
They were usually oval, either in the ‘antique manner’ with the subject wearing classical drapery, or in contemporary
costume, showing the garments in great detail. They were then cast in white enamel paste (of Tassie's own formulation),
the whole medallion being sometimes executed in this material (as is Iconic's Johnson medallion on offer); while
in other cases the head only appears in enamel, relieved against a background of ground glass tinted
of a subdued colour by paper placed behind (as is Iconic's medallion of Mrs Tassie). Tassie issued several catalogues detailing his work; the definitive edition being prepared
by Rudolphe Raspe. TECHNIQUE Tassie himself initially
modelled the subject in wax from which a negative image in plaster was prepared. Next, a positive master was made using sulphur,
which was readily available and easily workable as it melted only a few degrees above the boiling point of water - this set
quickly to a smooth hard finish. From this master, Tassie then prepared a mould from a mixture of Tripoli (diatomaceous
earth) and Plaster of Paris, placed in a small crucible. He was now ready to cast a medallion. The mould was placed in a furnace, with a slab of vitreous paste placed above it. When heated
the paste subsided into the mould, which was then removed from the furnace, and the back smoothed with an iron spatula. After
cooling, the finished medallion was separated from the mould, which might be later re-used.

FOR SALE: (below) An Archibald
Knox Silver and Enamel Cigarette Case, William Haseler for Liberty & Co, Hallmarked Birmingham 1905.
William Hair Haseler was based in Birmingham and founded his goldsmiths,
silversmiths and jewellers company in 1870. The firm Haseler & Co. went into partnership with Liberty & Co., when
the two firms joined forces to launch the Cymric silver scheme under the title of Liberty & Co. (Cymric) Ltd.
Archibald
Knox worked for Liberty & Co., and many of his designs for them, such as this cigarette case, were not marked as being
his design. Liberty had adopted a policy of not promoting the names of their designers in order to keep the public’s
full attention on their own brand identity.
Haseler was famed for manufacturing one of Archibald
Knox’s most iconic designs – his Tudric pewter square biscuit box. Haseler continued to produce silver for Liberty & Co. until the partnership of both firms ended in 1926.
A similar
silver and enamel cigarette case by Haseler for Liberty & Co., also hallmarked Birmingham, 1905 sold at Sotheby’s
Olympia on 01/06/2005 for £1,680 (Lot 1563847).
